Southgate Mall and Value Market create food security hub with Food & Trees for Africa

South Africa, October 2024 – A passionate group of individuals has come together to form the Boiphihlelo Food and Security Primary Cooperative, located at the heart of Southgate Mall, Gauteng. Driven by their keen interest in urban agriculture and a commitment to food security in their community, a transformative food garden project has been launched. With a dual focus on income generation and creating employment opportunities, Boiphihlelo Co-operative is turning an urban space into a flourishing agricultural hub. Through their shared vision, they aim to foster sustainable growth, empower the community, and contribute to a food-secure future for all. The next phase looks to educate young people on food production to improve livelihoods and create young farmers in the area.

CSI and sustainability at the pinnacle of development

Behind the project stands a dynamic collaboration between Southgate Mall and Value Market and Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), whose joint efforts have paved the way for this groundbreaking food garden initiative. Southgate Mall and Value Market, known for its community-centred approach, has provided funding and a crucial urban space for the project, while FTFA has brought its decades of expertise in sustainable agriculture and community greening. Together, they are driving agricultural advancement in an urban setting, showcasing innovative methods that not only redefine urban farming but also set a new standard for how commercial spaces can contribute to food security. This partnership marks a bold step towards integrating sustainability with commerce, creating a model of how urban landscapes can become hubs for agricultural growth and community empowerment.

This project exemplifies the impact that can be achieved when communities, businesses, and sustainability experts work together to tackle food security in urban spaces. The Boiphihlelo Co-operative’s commitment to agroecology aligns perfectly with our vision of creating greener, more resilient communities across South Africa,” says Robyn Hills, Head of Programmes at Food & Trees for Africa.

Practical Steps Toward a Sustainable Urban Agricultural Hub

The practical implementation of the Boiphihlelo Co-operative food garden project began with an agricultural training workshop in April 2024, where garden members were introduced to essential agroecology principles. This foundation in sustainable agricultural practices, paired with the momentum generated through three subsequent workshops, highlights the critical role of education and collaboration in fostering long-term development. By July, significant progress was made, with the installation of an electricity connection and the completion of irrigation, bed preparation, herb cultivation, and a borehole, ensuring access to water.

“At Southgate Mall and Value Market, we believe in the power of partnerships to drive meaningful change. By supporting the Boiphihlelo Co-operative’s food garden, we are not only utilising urban space in a sustainable way but also contributing to the empowerment and upliftment of our local community,” says Selina Seitshiro, General Manager at Southgate Mall and Value Market.

Now fully operational, the infrastructure represents a pivotal milestone in securing both food and water resources, essential for the agricultural sustainability of the urban project. Through these concerted efforts, the cooperative is steadily advancing toward establishing a resilient and productive agricultural hub that contributes to both food security and water sustainability for the community.

A Model for Future Urban Agricultural Projects

The success of the Boiphihlelo Co-operative’s food garden project serves as an inspiring blueprint for future urban agriculture initiatives across South Africa. By transforming a commercial urban space into a thriving agricultural hub, this initiative demonstrates the power of collaborative partnerships and innovative thinking in addressing food and water security challenges. The seamless integration of agroecological principles, sustainable infrastructure, and community-driven development positions the Boiphihlelo project as a replicable model for urban areas seeking to combine commercial development with food security solutions. As this initiative continues to grow, it stands as a beacon of possibility for other urban centres looking to harness the potential of agriculture to empower communities and create a more sustainable future.
