About the Initiative
This month saw Fortress REIT continue their commitment to sustainable development of the communities in which their malls are located. The Sterkspruit Plaza in Sterkspruit, Eastern Cape, will be launching its second phase in September 2019. In celebration of this and to honour their commitment to community development, Fortress REIT generously sponsored 2000 trees to communities of the greater Sterkspruit area. Thirteen schools received a total of 500 trees from this donation, comprised of 138 indigenous shade trees and 362 fruit trees, distributed through FTFA’s Trees for All Programme. The remaining 1500 fruit trees were distributed to 750 local residents of the Tienbank community in Sterkspruit, to be planted at their houses, through the Trees for Homes programme of FTFA.
With a total of 1862 fruit trees being donated to beneficiaries throughout Sterkspruit, this Fortress REIT initiative will have profound positive outcomes for community members in terms of long-term food security and enhanced nutrition and health. Moreover, with the inclusion of 138 indigenous shade trees, the 2000 trees donated to Sterkspruit will go a long way to enhancing the local environment and alleviating negative factors of climate change. In each iteration of Fortress REIT’s community development campaign with FTFA the sponsor has also provided long-term support for at least 2 food gardens in the area of their Trees for Homes projects. The holistic and integrated nature of Fortress REIT’s sponsorships ensures that maximum sustainable impact is achieved.
This is the fourth such initiative sponsored by Fortress REIT in 2019 alone, bringing the total number of fruit trees donated to households up to 4500 and the number of households impacted, across three provinces, to 2250. A further 935 trees, including 318 indigenous shade trees, have also been donated and distributed to 34 beneficiaries through FTFA’s Trees for All programme. The majority of these TFA beneficiaries have been primary schools, and a few community food gardens, in Gauteng and the Western and Eastern Cape. Food and Trees for Africa will be aiding Fortress REIT in achieving even greater impact as the partnership rolls out yet another greening project in Kwa-Zulu Natal in September 2019. Fortress REIT has committed to donating another 1000 fruit trees to go to 500 homes of the greater Cornubia area and a further 500 fruit trees to beneficiary schools identified and assessed by FTFA.
